Who we are

What we collect

Information you give us

The contact form asks for your full name, email address, phone number (optional), the type of inquiry, and your message. The form also records how long you spent filling it in and includes a hidden field that should stay blank. Both help us tell people from automated spam.

Information collected automatically

When you submit the form, we keep a keyed hash of your internet address and the email address you entered so that no one can send more than three messages an hour. A keyed hash cannot be turned back into your address.

Our hosting provider records the ordinary server log entries every website generates: the address of the page requested, your browser type, and your internet address.

Analytics, only if you accept

We use Google Analytics to see which pages are useful. Analytics cookies are off until you click Accept on the banner. Before that, Google receives only cookieless, non-identifying signals about the page URL. You can change your choice at any time from the Cookie settings link in the footer. Details are in our Cookie Policy.

What we do not collect

This website has no accounts, payments, newsletter, or chat. The only embedded map is the optional Google map on the About page, described below. Fonts are served from our own site, so no font provider sees your visit. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

How we use it

• To respond to your inquiry and, if you become a client, to begin our work together.
• To prevent abuse of the contact form.
• To understand, in aggregate, which pages visitors find useful.
• To operate, secure, and improve the website.

Who handles your information

We do not sell personal information. These providers process it on our behalf:

• Vercel hosts the website, runs the code that receives the contact form, and keeps the server logs described above. Vercel Speed Insights also measures how quickly each page loads for visitors (page address, load timings, device and browser type, and country). It sets no cookies and does not identify you.
• Upstash holds the short-lived rate-limiting records (the keyed hashes described above) that stop the form being abused.
• Google provides Analytics, subject to your consent, and the map of our office on the About page. The map loads only if you accepted cookies or press Show map; once it loads, Google receives your IP address and may set its own cookies under Google's privacy policy.
• Resend sends two emails when you use the form: a notification to us and a confirmation to you. It also stops sending to an address that bounces or marks our email as spam.

Links to our client portal (TaxDome), the employee payroll portal (NetLink), Google Maps, IRS.gov, and Michigan.gov take you to sites run by those organizations under their own privacy policies.

How long we keep it

• Rate-limiting records (the hashed address and email) expire automatically within about two hours.
• Resend keeps records of each email's delivery for a limited period under its own policy.
• Addresses that bounce or complain stay on Resend's suppression list so we do not email them again.
• Your message itself is not stored in our website database. It is delivered to us by email and kept as ordinary business correspondence.

Your choices

• Decline or change analytics at any time using Cookie settings in the footer.
• Ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, by emailing contact@portageincometax.com.
• Skip the form and call us at (269) 344-8727.

California residents

We do not respond to browser Do Not Track signals. Analytics cookies are off by default for everyone until you accept, regardless of that setting.

Our firm is below the revenue and volume thresholds of the California Consumer Privacy Act. We honor access and deletion requests from any visitor anyway, using the contact details above.

If you are outside the United States

This website is intended for people in Michigan and the surrounding area. If you visit from the European Union or the United Kingdom, our basis for processing is your consent for analytics and our legitimate interest in answering inquiries and preventing abuse for the contact form.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS. Database access is restricted to our server-side code, and internet addresses are stored only as keyed hashes. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, so please do not send Social Security numbers, account numbers, or tax documents through the contact form. Once you are a client, use the secure portal.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy we update the date at the top of the page. Material changes will be noted here.
